The energy was palpable, the anticipation electric. The Web Summit Lisbon 2025 kicked off last night its 10th edition in Lisboa with an opening ceremony that left no doubt: this year's event is going to be one for the history books! From the moment the doors opened, the center stage in MEO Arena buzzed with a global convergence of tech enthusiasts, innovators, and leaders, all eager to connect, learn, and be inspired.

The main stage lit up with a dazzling display of lights and sound, signaling the official start of what many call the "Davos for geeks." Paddy Cosgrave, co-founder and CEO of Web Summit, took the stage to a roaring welcome, his address setting the tone for a week of groundbreaking discussions and unparalleled networking. He emphasized the importance of human connection in an increasingly digital world. “The robots you see in the summit are not made in USA or made in EU, but they made in China, majority of AI innovations you see are made in China”, said Paddy highlighting the open-source opportunities China offers and with Web Summit China to come in the coming year.

Keynotes from leaders like the mayor of Lisbon Carlos Moedas highlighted the importance of Web Summit Lisbon with a new unicorn to be launched this week from the Unicorn Factory started in Lisbon and Goncalo Matias, Minister Adjunct and Stae reform shared deep insights into the economical and  innovation. We also had tennis legend Maria Sharapova shedding light on how AI is reshaping the $680 B sports industry.

The Standout Star: Khaby Lame

The most memorable performance of the night was provided by a global cultural phenomenon: Khaby Lame.

The TikTok sensation, renowned for his wordless comedy and now one of the world's most-followed creators, took the stage to an ovation. His presence highlighted the summit's recognition of how digital creativity is rapidly turning into big business. However, Lame's message was a surprising and refreshing counterpoint to the focus on profit.

He urged content creators to put passion before profit, stating, "If you just think about money, you'll never get rich. You'll get rich by doing what you love." He explained that the money and business side only came later, as his initial goal was simply to make people laugh. His call for resilience and to "Don't compare yourself to others" resonated deeply, reminding the tech community that true innovation is often fueled by authentic passion rather than immediate financial gain.

Qatar at Web Summit Lisbon

The Government Communications Office along with the Web summit Qatar team and multiple companies from Qatar are taking part in Web Summit Lisbon. There are various opportunities for their startups to get funding and kick start their next unicorn based in Qatar.

Web Summit isn't just about the main stage, though; it's about the vibrant tapestry of interactions happening everywhere. The exhibition floor, even on opening night, was a hive of activity. Startups showcased their cutting-edge innovations, investors mingled with entrepreneurs, and attendees forged new connections that could very well shape the future of tech. I saw everything from revolutionary sustainable tech to the next generation of personalized healthcare solutions.

The atmosphere was a testament to Lisbon itself – a city that beautifully blends ancient charm with modern dynamism, providing the perfect backdrop for an event that celebrates the future. The warmth of the Portuguese welcome was evident in every smile and every interaction.

As the official opening ceremony drew to a close, the buzz continued. Attendees spilled out into the night, heading to various fringe events and networking parties, the conversations flowing as freely as the Portuguese wine. The sense of community and shared purpose was truly remarkable.

This is just the beginning! Over the next few days, Web Summit Lisbon promises a packed schedule of talks, masterclasses, and networking opportunities. If opening night was any indication, we're in for an unforgettable experience. Stay tuned for more updates as we dive deeper into the heart of Web Summit!
